Government buildings’ security can be faced with threats like bombings, sabotage, unlawful entries, and theft. Because of this, it is imperative for these buildings to have adequate security measures in place. The first step is to have some basic guidelines in place, which can greatly improve government security. OSSI is dedicated to helping society have safer and more secure buildings, and government security is no exception. In an effort to help achieve our goals, we have provided some security tips.

Identify Outside Threats

When deciding which security measures are best for your building, it’s best to consider potential security threats. The security resources and policies selected should match the potential government security threats at hand.

government security Entrance Security

In most cases, terrorists, kidnappers, and thieves are the main threats to government security. To deter these individuals from entering these buildings, all main entrances should be secured with key-card access systems. Security personnel should also have metal detectors at all entrances, so that people and packages entering government buildings can be monitored. All government building staff should have recent access control badges for identification purposes, too. Finally, as a rule of thumb, only authorized contractors should be allowed to come into government buildings using access control badges.

Internal Security

The perimeter control systems should all be upgraded with the appropriate monitoring devices. Examples of monitoring systems include closed circuit monitoring devices and intercoms. All the keys of a government building should always be locked in a security office where only authorized people should be allowed access.

Crisis communication systems should also be installed inside of all government buildings. In a time of crisis, it’s essential that key personnel have access to and familiarity with these systems, so they can be used effectively. Duress alarms and intercoms are often used during a crisis, but government buildings should always have a backup communication system as an extra precaution.

Secure Locations

In an effort to protect executive offices from outside surveillance, these offices should be located in the inner sections of government buildings. The offices should also be arranged in such a way that all unescorted visitors can be easily monitored.  All important papers and documents should be kept out of reach and away from unauthorized people. Typically, these papers and documents should remain locked in secure cabinets, with keys hidden in separate security offices.

To keep buildings free of congestion, all recycling and trash receptacles should be kept out of walkways and emptied regularly. Doing so allows members of security to navigate through these buildings free of difficulty during times of crisis.

Alarms

To avoid any tampering, alarms should be used to protect all communication equipment. Electrical closets and telephone lines are common targets for criminals, so special measures should surround these areas.

Government security is essential to the protection of these important buildings. Practicing these security guidelines can help keep these entities more secure. To learn how our technology can help improve your government security, contact OSSI at (888) 488-2623 today.

Airport Security BreachedAirport Security and PSIM Solutions are something of growing concern. When traveling, the security and safety of our families is the most important thing to us and it’s something that some airports seem to be struggling with.

Airport Security Breached

In March, an accused rapist bordered a flight for London at John F. Kennedy Airport with a powerful weapon tucked away in his carry-on luggage. The weapon was a powerful 3,800-watt stun gun. This is possibly, the same weapon he allegedly used to subdue his 19 year old victim. The most frightening aspect was that the weapon made it through airport security and onto the plane. It was only discovered later during inventory after he was taken into custody at the request of New York City’s special victims unit. While stun guns are allowed to be transported in checked baggage, they are prohibited from being in carry-on luggage.

You might also recall hearing about the stranded jet skier who breached JFK Airport’s $100 million dollar security system. The man, who became stranded 3 miles from shore, swam until he reached land. At which point, he was faced again with the problem of being stranded. Only this time he was stuck on the outside of the airport’s 8 foot fence which was designed to keep out terrorists. With no other option, the man climbed the fence and walked across two runways, soaking wet and dressed in a bright yellow life vest, to a tarmac just outside the terminal. Not even thinking about the fact that he had just breached a $100 million security system and strolled completely undetected by motion detectors and closed-circuit cameras, he walked up to an airport employee to ask for help. It wasn’t until this point that he was “noticed” and authorities took him into custody for criminal trespassing.

Airport Security

It doesn’t matter if you’re looking at airport security, school security, or safety and security solutions for you business/organization. Having a solid security solution in place, and enforcing the policies around it, is vital to its success.

Government PSIM SolutionsEven with todays technology, it’s impossible to completely prevent a potential terror attack. However, that is not to say that your local government cannot prepare for these situations when they do take place. Many cities are now looking into implementing local government PSIM solutions to improve on their current security systems, which goes beyond simple video surveillance.

Local Government PSIM Solutions

Physical Security Information Management, known as PSIM, is a software solution that combines multiple security, communication, detection, and alerting systems into a single command and control interface.

The surveillance system for most cities is broken up into sub systems. The city has a video surveillance system, DOT transit has their own video surveillance system, and private enterprises provide yet another group of video surveillance. Because of these multiple systems, the odds of a terror attack being caught on surveillance video is high. However, the odds of the operator having immediate access to the video is not. What PSIM does, is combines the video from all of these surveillance cameras and allows it to be viewed on a single map-based display. This can dramatically increase the effectiveness and reach of a city’s video surveillance capabilities.

Extending Government PSIM Solutions

PSIM offers benefits far beyond simply having access to video. With PSIM, we can take advantage of correlating information from other systems such as license plate recognition, gunshot recognition, communication systems, access control, geographic information systems, mass notification, radiological sensors, and so on.

Various agencies have the ability to use PSIM to help automate response plans for any given situation. Once the operators are alerted to an emergency situation, they can instantly see exactly what is happening, where it’s happening, and how exactly they should respond to the situation. This information can then be immediately shared with the appropriate agencies and individuals.

Whatever your needs are, OSSI-USA has you covered. From schools to airports, we have the right solution for your security needs. Give OSSI a call today at (888)488-2623 or (262) 522-1870 for an Integrator near you.

Two men, now widely-known as the Boston Bombers, shook the nation on April 15, 2013. One man was subsequently arrested, and the other died during a gunfire exchange a few days later. Recently, three additional men have been arrested in connection with the attack. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents worked quickly to locate the suspects, and they relied heavily on video surveillance evidence to do so.

Video Surveillance and Boston Bombing

Caught in the Act

Immediately after the blasts, the FBI requested video surveillance footage from all surrounding stores and businesses. According to The Washington Post, the nearby Lord & Taylor camera directly across the street from where the bombings occurred was a key piece in determining suspects. The video allegedly shows someone dropping the black backpack at the scene. Most retail stores in the area have closed-circuit cameras that pan and tilt, much like the one that captured clear images of the suspects. These cameras catch any activity going on outside the business.

Request for Public’s Help

On April 18, just days after the blasts, FBI agents requested the public to help in identifying two men they considered suspects. After analyzing photos, video footage, and other evidence the FBI agents were able to release clear images of the suspects taken from surveillance cameras near the scene. The FBI has since said it received thousands of tips based on the released camera footage and information.

Cameras and Crime

Video surveillance cameras are used every day to catch suspects. Banks, department stores, governmental buildings, and more all use this tool as a way to not only catch criminals, but also to deter crime from happening in the first place. Had those surveillance cameras not been present and recording at the time of the marathon blasts, the FBI and public may not have identified the suspects so quickly and efficiently.

Boston was subsequently shut down in a massive manhunt for the identified men. While city lockdowns are not frequent occurrences, unfortunately building lockdowns are. In the case of a lockdown, OSSI’s Intelli-Site PSIM (Physical Security Information Management) solution can ensure your building and its occupants stay safe by reducing human error and providing greater situational awareness of all the security devices in your facility. A new type of eyewear introduced by Google has recently sparked intense conversation— not only for it’s innovation and technology, but also for its use in casinos. That’s right. The new Google Glass eyewear is already being banned in casinos across the nation.

Google Glass Banned in Casinos

What is Google Glass?

The concept for Google Glass was introduced in April 2012 as a wearable computer device. Google Glass has not yet been introduced to the public, but some lucky users have had the opportunity to test the mini computer. It displays information like a hands-free smartphone would, but it’s worn as a pair of eyeglasses. Google Glass capabilities include snapping photos, surfing the web, checking for directions and catching video— all without even pushing a button.

Why the restriction?

In an effort to remove any suspicion or occurrences of cheating, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement ordered 12 casinos in the state to ban use of the device. Some casinos in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Connecticut, and Las Vegas also have similar bans in place to deter dishonest game play. The reason? David Rebuck of the Division said Google Glass could broadcast a poker player’s hand to a conspirator or possibly be used in another dishonest way.

Taking No Chances

Most agree that it would be hard to definitively prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone is using the device to cheat. However, Google Glass’ video recording, Internet searching, information receiving, and photo-snapping capabilities open up a whole new realm of possibilities for players to be dishonest. Therefore, the zero-tolerance policy in some casinos has been put in place, and we expect many more to follow suit. Casinos enacting the ban may ask any gambler to remove the eyeglasses and could kick out anyone refusing the order.

With security and deterrence of cheating being a top priority to many casinos, it’s no surprise this mini computer is already being restricted. Casino owners go to great lengths to protect their property and players, which is why technology like PSIM security software is so important in the industry. Government-owned and/or public buildings like post offices or city halls are often equipped with monitoring surveillance cameras. In fact, it would be rare to see public buildings not equipped with security cameras. Undoubtedly, video surveillance offers a great security solution for government facilities, buildings, and operations. Installing such systems can implement comprehensive security solutions or enhance existing systems that will keep your employees, buildings, and records safe. Video Surveillance in Government

Uses of Video Surveillance: Federal and National Government

The use of surveillance cameras by government spans different uses. Besides establishing a secure environment at government facilities and buildings, video surveillance is used to provide temporary security at government events such as inaugural balls, speeches, and parades. In fact, one of the very first uses of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) was to monitor crowds during public events that featured foreign dignitaries. Presently, with concerns about assassinations and terrorism at an all-time high, advanced video surveillance systems that feature video analytics can help stave off disasters.

Local, State, and Municipal Government Applications

Smaller localities across America are also using CCTV systems and security cameras. For instance, a city may use video surveillance to protect its transportation facilities such as airports and bus stations.

At a smaller level, security cameras are applicable in numerous civic locations. Local departments and governments have used them in the monitoring of traffic patterns. These cameras capture the data of drivers who run red lights or speed, thereby helping to raise money through the issuance of traffic tickets for local and city governments. Some local governments have even began teaming up with local businesses and offering them incentives to install video surveillance on their premises in order to monitor public areas and boost security in places that experience high pedestrian traffic.

Like surveillance cameras in national and federal applications, security cameras also protect local and municipal government facilities such as courts, office buildings, museums, police stations, etc. Temporary video surveillance is also a popular security technique employed by law enforcement at rallies, public gatherings, and protests.

Prison security cameras

Penitentiaries- whether local, state, or federal- have adopted constant video surveillance and security cameras as a security mechanism. Since guards can only do so much in keeping a jail safe, these systems help officials ensure that prison areas are kept up to protocol and are secure. Surveillance cameras are also extremely beneficial in monitoring prisoner behavior- especially those considered a danger to themselves or those with repeat serious offenses.

As part of an overall plan, video surveillance presents an excellent security solution for government operations and should an incident occur, authorities are guaranteed to get to the bottom of the matter in no time as the cameras provide valuable evidence. For more information on how your business or facility can benefit from PSIM security software, give OSSI a call toll-free at (888) 533-7508 or locally at (262) 955-8770.

It seems like every time I turn on the news, there is a story about a city hall, school, or hospital in a lockdown situation. In more extreme cases, entire cities in danger have shut down. Unfortunately lockdowns are becoming a semi-common occurrence, and it is important to be prepared. With adequate preparation, you can ensure that you and other building occupants will stay safe in an emergency situation. Lockdown preparation to stay safe

Steps to Staying Safe

Participate in Drills

If your school or company participates in drills for lockdowns (or any other emergency), always fully partake. Treating drills seriously now will ensure you feel more prepared in the future.

Follow Instructions

Even if a procedure feels counterintuitive, follow emergency personnel and/or your supervisor’s instructions. By acting impulsively, you could put yourself in a dangerous or even deadly situation. Most schools, airports, hospitals, and other public facilities have created strategic plans to follow in the event of a lockdown, so carefully listen to instructions.

Lock the Doors

In the event that a potentially-dangerous person is in or near your building, ensure that you have locked the doors to deter anyone from entering. Don’t open the door for anyone, unless you are sure who it is. If you can, place a chair in front of the door to prevent it from opening.

Hide from Plain View

Do not sit or stand in front of the door, and try to find a hiding spot out of plain view. In an office setting, windowless rooms or cubicles are typically a good place to go. If you’re in a bathroom, sit in a stall and pull your feet up from plain view.

Stay Calm

Panicking is never a good idea in a lockdown situation. Take deep breaths, and stay quiet. Staying calm in a dangerous situation will help you think clearly and logically.

Technology plays a large role in keeping building occupants safe during lockdowns. OSSI offers Compass Hardware systems to help control building access and arm or disarm alarm systems. Call us toll-free today at (888) 533-7508 to learn more about the technology that will keep you safe in a lockdown.

Physical security information management solutions (PSIM) play an important role in protecting confidential information and safeguarding restricted areas. These solutions allow operators to gather vital information about any occurrence. In high security environments such as government buildings, security systems are particularly important.

Instead of the traditional solution of administering systems individually, PSIM security software offers complete system integration. All of the connected systems will report to a rules engine, which will significantly reduce human error and react to an emergency or security threat. As part of the solution, cameras will offer video verification. Additionally, audio of the affected area may be broadcasted, or recorded, as the PSIM provides a list of responsive measures for the government operator to take.

An integrated platform improves current investments, joining multiple systems in one interface. It collects and links occurrences from existing distinct security appliances and security systems as a complete solution. This in turn empowers various individuals to recognize and resolve situations in the most comprehensive manner. PSIM integration offers various benefits as mentioned below.

government building security system

  • Improved situation awareness
  • Increased control
  • Management reporting
  • Automated video monitoring/recording
  • Automated audio monitoring/recording

These solutions enable government organizations to minimize costs as a result of enhanced efficiency. It also enables them to promote safety through improved intelligence.

Changing Processes and Strategies

Procedures and policies change regularly in government organizations and PSIM solutions will increase their value with the changes because of its adaptability. When such changes take place, operators can employ new PSIM resolutions based on the changes.

Total PSIM software has the following abilities:

Collection

Device management self-sufficient software collects information from all distinct security systems or devices.

Analysis

This system analyses and links data, actions, and alarms so that it may recognize the actual conditions and their priority.

Verification

PSIM software offers the relevant situation data in a fast and easy to understand format so that an operator may confirm the situation.

Resolution

This system offers Standard Operating Procedures, step-by-step directions that are based on ideal practices and organizations’ policies that informs the operator how to react to resolve the threat or event.

Reporting

This software captures all the data and steps for conformity reporting, guidance, and potentially intensive investigative analysis.

Audit Trail

PSIM monitors how each operator interacts with the PSIM system.  Through reporting, the staff can calculate response time for any situation and will also note any manual changes to the security system. This allows the rules to be changed to improve the response in the future.

PSIM Based Integration

PSIM allows for simple operation of multiple technologies. Our system can be manipulated to adapt to all types of government buildings and facilities. To learn more about PSIM security software, contact OSSI.

PSIM, or Physical Security Information Management, was introduced to the physical security world several years ago in 2006 with the idea that most information relating to security is in data form. Once that data is analyzed and contextualized, it becomes valuable info that can be used in order to make better decisions regarding the success and security of one’s business. One type of business that can benefit from PSIM is storage facilities.

PSIM solutions have traditionally been implemented in large facilities where the system has an operator watching and controlling all the subsystems in an online manner.  Storage facilities typically don’t have an option for that type of overhead unless the organization is very large and the PSIM is controlling a multi locational operation.

PSIM technology can be implemented to replace the operator in small applications, which can take control of a facility, reposition cameras, record the video with both pre and post event recording, change the access control rules and inform the operations manager of events transpiring at a facility via text message, e-mail or other means.

PSIM security technology in a storage facility

Why does PSIM matter?

Before answering this question, it’s important to note that standard security systems are not integrated to work together. PSIM is a cohesive software security system created to connect security application devices that typically don’t work together. This software is then controlled under one complete user interface to provide a cohesive and integrated security system.

PSIM: A New World of Security

PSIM system is a very effective mechanism that allow storage facilities to not only improve their security, but also to improve customer satisfaction. Combined, PSIM technology can help with:

  • Auditing operator behavior by recording the responses to every alert so they can be analyzed

  • Identifying trends by mining through data from past and current events, which becomes the basis for creating reports

  • Guiding standard operating procedures in order to document efficient practices for every type of situation

  • Presenting a situational view of data

  • Analyzing, correlating, and aggregating data from different sources, including video surveillance, intrusion detection systems, environmental sensors, and alarms

  • Improving effectiveness and efficiency of protecting customers, units, and valuables

Storage facilities must provide the highest levels of security to protect both their customers and the valuables within the storage units. PSIM can help storage facilities not only be in compliance with security regulations, but also those improve transparency, accountability and effectiveness. For more information on implementing PSIM at your storage facility, contact OSSI at (888) 488-2623.

PSIM Greatly Increases Bank Safety - OSSIA bank is where we put our full trust and confidence that our savings, possessions, and important valuables are safely protected. However, because banks hold huge amounts of money and possessions, they are subject to various security threats, robberies, and other criminal activities. Bank safety is important to gain the trust and continued patronage of every client. Knowing that you can safely make your everyday transactions not only facilitates trust, but it also helps you sleep just a little better at night knowing that your assets are protected and secure.

CCTV Security

Most banks are required by law to install a CCTV camera to properly monitor all priority banking areas on a 24/7 basis. Aside from ensuring that their clients’ savings are in good hands, it also boosts the bank’s confidence and ensures their employees that they are in a safe working environment. Bank security personnel can also monitor high-risk areas even if they are not physically present through the recorded videos stored in the banks security files. This data can then be used as evidence if the need arises. The recorded footage proves to be a very effective tool that aids in criminal investigations and acts as strong evidence presented during court proceedings.

PSIM

When it comes to securing high-risk places like banks, the need for an Integrated Security Systems arises. Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) holds the ideal solution to all bank safety needs. PSIM is a security software with the purpose of integrating a wide range of multiple unconnected security devices to gain access, control, and monitoring through a comprehensive and easy-to-navigate user interface.

PSIM effectively collects events gathered from a wide selection of security devices and information systems like videos, sensors, analytics, networks, and more. It helps coordinate and keep all security files in sync with the security devices connected to the main server. Security personnel area can then effectively monitor and ensure complete bank safety.

Emergency Lockdown Procedures

In the event of a bank robbery and/or major threat to bank safety, an emergency lockdown procedure is applied. Security personnel are able to monitor activity through the CCTV cameras, and the head of the security can initiate or order a lockdown to secure all entrance and exit points of the bank. The PSIM software then coordinates all connected devices for the cameras, doors and safes while helping facilitate a lockdown that will keep clients and employees safe.

OSSI is the world leader in security integration and PSIM solutions, which helps keep bank employees, clients and assets safe. For more information in implementing PSIM, give us a call at (888) 488-2623.
